Nutritionist John Forti’s quote seems especially applicable in these times of paranoia where everyone seems rushed to get the next flu shot. Boosting your immune system can be a much broader defense to the hundreds of different flu strains than the vaccine intended to protect us against one or only a few variations of this virus. Here are some simple immediate ways to boost your immune system

1. Decrease sugar intake, which depresses your immune system. Yes, fruit juice can actually increase your chances of getting sick.

2. Eat more veggies, they are the best source of the vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that are known to protect the body against many diseases, including cancer.

3. Increase vitamin D intake, which boosts your immune system, ideally through sun exposure and seafood (particuarly salmon and tuna).
