Sprinting is one of the best ways to apply force quickly into the ground, a method of training that teaches athletes to use the stretch shortening cycle, which allows athletes to perform movements better with a prior movement (running start to a sprint or jump versus a standstill).
The benefit at the heart of this movement, applying force quickly into the ground, is drastically reduced by running excessively long distances (>100 yards each rep or 500 yards total) and/or not providing enough rest to fully recover.
If the goal is something other than speed, you should stop sprinting and rethink your approach. For example, the best way to improve endurance would be through playing more of your sport or recovering more. Why do we make our baseball and volleyball players run at all?
