Phil Wagner, M.D
Phil spent 8 years as a strength & conditioning coach at University of California Berkeley and University of California Los Angeles, including 3 National Championships, as well as a performance coach for the Canterbury Crusaders and the New South Wales Waratahs (professional rugby teams in New Zealand and Australia). Following his coaching career, he graduated medical school as a physician from University of Southern California, focused on studying biomechanics at their School of Physical Therapy’s Biokinesiology Lab. Dr. Wagner founded Sparta Performance Science in the Silicon Valley as a facility to directly measure and enhance performance alongside athlete resilience to injury. This business evolved to include a larger technology business, Sparta Software Corporation (est. 2012), which provides an athlete data management platform to establish evidence based practices within sports organizations.

Mike Hoffmann
Mike came to Sparta as an Athletic Performance Coach. Before Sparta, Mike was the football strength & conditioning coach at Lindenwood University where he also got his MBA. He has previous stops at St. Louis University, the University of Iowa, and Athlete’s Performance. Mike has transitioned into a business development role, where he draws from his personal coaching experience to assist coaches find the most valuable and practical solutions for their organization.

Kelsey Holshouser
Kelsey was a Division 1 student-athlete at Stanford where she graduated with a B.S. in Management Science & Engineering. Having battled a shoulder injury throughout her water polo career, she was drawn to Sparta by the vision of helping build more resilient athletes.  Kelsey draws from her background in product management and scaling operations with the goal of sustainably growing Sparta’s reach to many people as possible.

Phil Brady
Phil Brady has been with Sparta since 2009 after serving as a strength coach in the Florida Marlins Organization and the University of Texas. During his time playing Division I baseball at University of Texas, San Antonio, Phil realized his passion for coaching.  Phil’s mission is to transform athlete’s lives by putting them to the test physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
Bryce Patterson
Bryce came to Sparta after spending over 3 years at Dixie State University as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. He has spent his 6 years in the field, primarily at small schools with low budgets and high athlete:coach ratios. With that experience, Bryce helps our partners utilize technology in order to spend less time behind the computer screen and more time building relationships with their athletes. In addition, Bryce coaches athletes at Sparta Training ground where he is able to incorporate technology into high performance training every day.

Sara Davison
Sara was a Division I student-athlete at Iowa State University where she graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science.  A 4-year starter for the softball team, she was plagued with injuries throughout her career.  Now armed with Sparta’s evidence based practices to combat injury, Sara is passionate about assisting practitioners within collegiate and professional organizations build stronger, more resilient athletes.
Business Development
Matt Long
Upon graduating from Santa Clara University, Matt trained as an athlete at Sparta throughout his 7 year career in professional baseball. As an athlete, Matt recognized the gap between sport science and its application in organizations. Today, he works to find practical solutions for strength coaches, sport coaches, and sports medicine in order to close the gaps within athletic departments.
Kayla Sowinski
Before joining the Sparta family, she worked with the Chico State Women’s Soccer and Softball teams during Graduate school. Kayla is passionate about the developmental process of building better athletes through trust but more importantly creating a culture where athletes are held accountable to what they can do.
Brian Buck
Brian Buck is a former St. Louis Cardinal draft pick with a degree in Kinesiology from Arizona State University. Brian served 4 years as the Physical Performance Coordinator for Colorado Rockies before moving on to the Boras Sports Training Institute. He joins the Sparta team going on his seventh year working in Physical Performance and will contribute to the team in a Customer Success role. He will be helping our partners utilize the Sparta technology in order to spend more time building resilient athletes and less time behind a computer screen.
CTO & VP Engineering
Greg Woodward, PhD
Greg oversees technology design and development at Sparta Science, and specializes dynamics & kinematics, together with agile development methodologies, with over 25 years of commercial software development experience. Most recently, Greg was CTO of NASDAQ Private Market (NPM) where he led their agile development team. Before NPM, Greg was CTO of SharesPost, Vice President of Engineering at ZOZI, and he learned agile software development at Pivotal Labs, where he spent two years at Google. At Lockheed Martin, Greg developed a nuclear missile detection system based on simulating a warhead in flight. He has served as Chief Architect and Director of Engineering at several e-commerce startup companies, and has developed several physics simulation engines. Greg graduated 1st in his class at Texas A&M University with a BS in mechanical engineering, and received MS and PhD degrees in ME from Stanford University, where his research involved the use of tethered satellites with the space shuttle. Greg is a President’s Endowed Scholar, Gathright Scholar, National Merit Scholar, and received graduate fellowships from the National Science Foundation, Stanford, and the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society.

Matthew McCue
Matthew joins Sparta after completing his graduate education at Stanford University and following a 10 year military career where he served as a Marine Force Reconnaissance officer. He is a lifelong athlete, who played football throughout junior high, high school, and college. Matthew is excited to bring data driven solutions to the warrior-athletes that keep our nation safe.
